Queerness & Dis/ability: A Multivoiced Human Library brings people together for conversations with ‘living books’ who share their experiences regarding queerness, dis/ability, and justice. This event is part of the Utrecht Queer Culture Festival and Accessibility Week. In a small setting, visitors are welcome to listen, ask questions, and discover new perspectives. Visitors can ‘read’ these books through short, personal conversations—always conducted with mutual respect. You ask only the questions you would be willing to answer yourself, and a book shares only what they wish to share. Following a spoken-word opening, there will be three rounds of conversation in which you engage with a book in small groups to talk about their living experience with queerness, dis/ability, and striving for justice.
In addition to the conversations, an exhibition will be on display at the UvH throughout the week.
What is a book?
In this Human Library, the ‘books’ are not made of paper but are people: individuals who share part of their life story with you in a short, personal conversation. As a visitor, you ‘borrow’ a book for the duration of a round. You listen, ask questions, and engage in conversation with curiosity and respect—a book shares what they want to share, and you, as the reader, provide the space for that to happen.
Why ‘multivoicedness’?
We consciously choose the term ‘multivoiced’ rather than ‘representative’. The books do not stand for the definitive experience of queerness or disability—doing so would fail to do justice to the multitude of lives encompassed by these terms. Multivoicedness refers to the multiple, sometimes divergent perspectives and stories that converge within a single person’s life. Each book is unique, and together, they demonstrate the diversity of ways in which queerness, disability, and striving for justice can manifest in people’s lives.
Location
The event will take place at the University of Humanistic Studies (garden entrance, Pieterskerkhof 13b).
Language
The event will be accessible for both Dutch and English speakers. The spoken word performance will be in English, but the rest of the program will be mixed. In every round there will be a mix of English and Dutch speaking books.

Queerness & Dis/ability: A Multivoiced Human Library
Queerness & Dis/ability: A Multivoiced Human Library brengt mensen samen voor gesprekken met ‘levende boeken’ die hun ervaringen rondom Queerness, Dis/ability en Justice delen. Dit event is onderdeel van het Utrecht Queer Culture Festival en de Week van Toegankelijkheid. In een intieme setting ben je als bezoeker welkom om te luisteren, vragen te stellen en nieuwe perspectieven te ontdekken. Bezoekers kunnen deze boeken ‘lezen’: in een kort, persoonlijk gesprek, altijd met respect voor elkaar. Je stelt alleen vragen die je zelf ook zou willen beantwoorden. Een boek deelt alleen wat die zelf wil delen. Na een opening met spoken word volgen drie gespreksrondes, waarin je in kleine groepen in gesprek gaat met mensen met living experience over queerness, dis/ability en het streven naar justice.
Naast de gesprekken is er de hele week ook een expositie te bezoeken op de UvH.
Wat is een boek?
In deze Human Library zijn de ‘boeken’ geen papier, maar mensen: mensen die een deel van hun levensverhaal met je delen in een kort, persoonlijk gesprek. Als bezoeker ‘leen’ je een boek voor de duur van een ronde. Je luistert, stelt vragen, en gaat het gesprek in met nieuwsgierigheid en respect — een boek deelt wat die wíl delen, en jij als lezer geeft daar de ruimte voor.
Waarom meerstemmig?
We kiezen bewust voor ‘meerstemmig’ in plaats van ‘representatief’. De boeken staan niet vóór dé ervaring van queerness of dis/ability — dat zou de veelheid aan levens onder deze noemer tekortdoen. Meerstemmigheid gaat over de meerdere, soms uiteenlopende perspectieven en verhalen die in iemands eigen leven samenkomen. Elk boek is uniek, en samen laten de boeken zien hoe divers queerness en disability en het streven naar justice zich in mensenlevens kunnen tonen.
Locatie
Het evenement vindt plaats bij de Universiteit voor Humanistiek (tuin toegang, Pieterskerkhof 13b).
Taal
Het evenement is toegankelijk voor zowel Nederlands als Engels sprekende mensen. De spoken word introductie is in het Engels, maar de rest van het programma zal gemixt zijn. In elke ronde zal er een mix van Engels en Nederlands sprekende boeken zijn.
