What does it mean to take up space in a world that is not always designed for everyone in mind? How can different living experiences change the way you think about a just society? What multivoiced perspectives emerge when we connect queerness, dis/ability and justice?
The Multivoiced Human Library – an initiative of the University of Humanistic Studies (UvH) – will be hosted during the Utrecht Queer Culture Festival, as part of the Dutch Week of Accessibility on 5 October. We bring people together as ‘living books’ to share their experiences of queerness, dis/ability and the pursuit of justice.
As a visitor, you are invited to listen and ask questions in a short, personal conversation in a small group setting, always with mutual respect. You only ask questions you would be willing to answer yourself. A ‘book’ only shares what they choose to share.
Following a spoken word performance about belonging and identity by Carla Boulos musically accompanied by Nour Wahedi, and a short introduction by the organisation, there will be three rounds of conversations. In small parallel groups, you will have the opportunity to talk with people with living experience about queerness, dis/ability and the pursuit of justice. The stories and conversations will be in both Dutch and English. To conclude the Human Library, we reflect briefly on the value of centering Multivoicedness in conversations on queerness, dis/ability and the pursuit of justice.
Alongside the Human Library, an exhibition will be open to visitors at the UvH throughout the week.
Why multivoiced?
We deliberately choose the term ‘multivoiced’ rather than ‘representative’. The books do not speak for the experience of queerness or dis/ability – doing so would fail to capture the diversity of lives and experiences encompassed by these terms. Being multivoiced is about the multiple, sometimes contrasting perspectives and stories that come together within a person’s own life. The speakers bring their own multivoicedness to the conversation. Together, the books show the many different ways in which queerness, dis/ability and the pursuit of justice can take shape in people’s lives.

Location
The event will take place at the University of Humanistic Studies (UvH), starting in room 0.38. The address of the UvH is Kromme Nieuwegracht 29, but we recommend using the garden entrance at Pieterskerkhof 13b. From the garden, you will be guided to the automatically opening doors. The whole event takes place on the ground floor.
Accessibility
A low-stimulus quiet room will be available throughout the event for anyone who needs a moment of rest.
The part of the program taking place in 0.38 will be amplified using microphones. The ‘book rounds’ will take place in several different rooms, not all of which have sound amplification. This will be indicated during the event.
Language
The event is accessible to both Dutch- and English-speaking visitors. The spoken word introduction will be in English, while the rest of the programme will be offered in both Dutch and English.

Queerness & Dis/ability: A Multivoiced Human Library
Wat betekent het om ruimte in te nemen in een wereld die niet voor iedereen ontworpen is? Hoe kunnen verschillende living experiences jouw beeld van een rechtvaardige samenleving veranderen? Welke meerstemmige perspectieven ontstaan wanneer we queerness, dis/ability en justice met elkaar verbinden?
De Multivoiced Human Library – een initiatief van de Universiteit voor Humanistiek (UvH) – wordt gehost tijdens het Utrecht Queer Culture Festival in de Week van Toegankelijkheid op 5 oktober. We brengen mensen samen om als ‘levende boeken’ hun ervaringen rondom Queerness, Dis/ability en het streven naar rechtvaardigheid te delen.
Je bent als bezoeker welkom om te luisteren en vragen te stellen: in een kort, persoonlijk gesprek in kleine setting, altijd met respect voor elkaar. Je stelt alleen vragen die je zelf ook zou willen beantwoorden. Een ‘boek’ deelt alleen wat die zelf wil delen.
Na een spoken word performance over belonging en identiteit door Carla Boulos muzikaal begeleid door Nour Wahedi, en een korte introductie door de organisatie, volgen drie gespreksrondes, waarin je in kleine parallele groepen in gesprek gaat met mensen met levende ervaringen over queerness, dis/ability en het streven naar rechtvaardigheid. De verhalen en gesprekken zijn in het Nederlands en Engels. We ronden de Human Library af met een korte reflectie over de waarde van het centraal stellen van Meerstemmigheid in gesprekken over queerness, dis/ability en het streven naar rechtvaardigheid.
Naast de Human Library is er de hele week ook een expositie te bezoeken op de UvH.
Waarom meerstemmig?
We kiezen bewust voor ‘meerstemmig’ in plaats van ‘representatief’. De boeken staan niet vóór dé ervaring van queerness of dis/ability — dat zou de veelheid aan levens onder deze noemer tekortdoen. Meerstemmigheid gaat over de meerdere, soms uiteenlopende perspectieven en verhalen die in iemands eigen leven samenkomen. De sprekers laten hun eigen meerstemmigheid zien. En de boeken samen laten zien hoe divers queerness en disability en het streven naar rechtvaardigheid zich in mensenlevens kan tonen.

Locatie
Het evenement vindt plaats bij de Universiteit voor Humanistiek, opening in zaal 0.38. Het adres van de UvH is Kromme Nieuwegracht 29, maar wij adviseren u de tuin toegang te gebruiken: Pieterskerkhof 13b. Via de binnentuin wordt u naar de automatisch openslaande deuren geleid. Het gehele evenement vindt plaats op de begane grond.
Toegankelijkheid
Tijdens het evenement zal er ten alle tijde een prikkelarme rustruimte beschikbaar zijn.
De onderdelen in zaal 0.38 zullen worden versterkt met microfoons. De ‘boeken rondes’ vinden plaats in verschillende ruimtes die niet allemaal geluidsversterking bieden. Dit zal worden aangegeven tijdens het evenement.
Taal
Het evenement is toegankelijk voor zowel Nederlands als Engels sprekende mensen. De spoken word introductie is in het Engels, maar de rest van het programma zal gemixt zijn. In elke ronde zal er een mix van Engels en Nederlands sprekende boeken zijn.

This event is part of the program of the Utrecht Queer Culture Festival taking place from 2-11 October in Utrecht. It is also organized in light of the Week of Accessibility 5-11 October.
This is a project funded by Vfonds (2025-2026) and organized by two chair groups from the University of Humanistic Studies in Utrecht: the chair Disability Studies and the chair Historical Memory and Transformative Justice.
